The Children's Library provides a wide
range of services for children, and their parents, caregivers, and schools.
 
As a member of Rotorua Public Library you can borrow:
 
 Books
  • Board books for babies
    These have cardboard pages designed for children in their first and second year.
 
  • Picture books
    Picture books introduce children to a wide range of experiences, themes, feelings, characters, art and language.
 
  • Early Readers
    Aimed at children just learning to read, reluctant readers and those learning English as Second Language.  They have large print, and lots of illustrations.
 
  • Golo Solo Books
    Aimed at newly independent readers these books contain short chapters and are heavily illustrated. They help newly independent readers gain reading confidence. 

 

  • Junior Fiction
    Books in this collection have longer stories, fewer illustrations, and more complex plots. They are for young readers who have gained reading confidence.
 
  • Fiction for older Children
    Books in this collection are aimed at confident, independent young readers aged 9 - 12 years. These chapter books contain more complex stories, themes and characters.

 

  • Graphic novels

    On these books the story is relayed through a combination of text and sequentail art   similar to the comic-book format. They are highly popular among young readers and often appeal to reluctant readers.


  • Illustrated Works

These books consist of heavily illustrated books with an appropriate level of sophistication and complexity aimed at independent readers. A significant aspect of these books is to foster visual literacy.

  • Puzzle Books

      This collection contains such titles as 'Where's Wally' and 'Choose your Own Adventure'. The reader interacts with the story and/or pictures.

    • Information books
      On a wide range of subjects, abilities and interests.

     

    • Nga Pukapuka Maori
      These books are written in Maori or are about things Maori, written in English and Maori.

    Also

    • Stories on CDs and cassettes
      For children of all ages. This collection contains a large range of new and old books on CDs or cassettes.

     

    • Kits (Story or music book with cassettes or CDs)
      Read and listen at the same time

     

    • Music tapes and CDs
      e.g. nursery rhymes, songs

     

    • Magazines
      Magazines for general interest reading and some that focus on natural, scientific, geography topics e.g. Dig, BMX, K-Zone, Sports Illustrated.

     

    • CD-ROMs
      Fun and educational CD-ROMs

     

    • Wooden jigsaw puzzles
      For children up to approximately 5 years

     

    • Toys 
      For children up to approximately 7 years (read more about the Toy Library below)

     

    • DVDs
      A great selection of songs, stories, movies and documentories are now available on DVD. 

     

    PLUS

  • The Rotorua Library welcomes visits from pre-school groups, school classes and other groups, or librarians can come out and visit your group or class.

  • A library staff member will be happy to show your group interesting resources, read stories, and guide you around the library.

  • ROTORUA COMMUNITY TOY LIBRARY

    The Rotorua Community Toy Library is a voluntary organisation.

    In partnership with the public library the Toy Library offers a fantastic range of toys that can be borrowed for a small rental.

    All Rotorua Public Library members can borrow toys on their library card .

    Among the many toys available are:

    · Costumes

    · Push-along toys

    · Trains

    · Ride-on Toys

    · Musical toys

    · Construction toys


    Toys may be borrowed for 3 weeks

    Rental for toys ranges from $1.00 to $2.50

    There is a $1/00 reserve fee for all toys placed on hold.


    The Toy Library Voluntary Committee members buy all new toys, process them ready for borrowing and mend or withdraw toys when required.
