Another talented local artist, Karen Miller is currently exhibiting in Toi Tangata. Karen is totally self taught, having drawn since she was a child. Art went on the back-burner as she worked and then raised five children but now that the two youngest are in their teens, she has had time to rediscover her talent, this time using paint. Karen is showing a lovely variety of work which will be on show until Saturday 20th February.
Local artists can exhibit their work in the library at no charge in our Toi Tangata Art Space. Approximately 7,500 people of all ages visit our library each week, creating a wonderful opportunity to show off your talents, whether it be painting, sculpture, photographs or weaving. Each exhibition lasts for three weeks which is the average book turn-over time span, thereby giving most of the regular library users the chance to view your work.

Toi Tangata has now received bookings for exhibitions right up to June 2010 ! That's great news and we look forward to each and every display of local talent coming up. If anyone would like to put their name forward as a stand-in just incase we get a cancellation, you are most welcome.
Krishna Smith Krishna honoured our library by offering to exhibit his stunning painting, "Whaingaroa ki te Aroha" -The great pursuit of love/compassion for our opening ceremony in July.
It depicts a sunset scene from Whaingaroa (Raglan) on the west coast of the North Island. The central korare (flower) stem of the harakeke (flax) signifies oneness- solitude or unity, depending on the viewer’s perception.

Jin Wha Kim, Jun Lee & Paula Lee An exciting display of models , origami and paintings were submitted by Jin Wha Kim and her two, very talented children. From very small to large scale models, the unique exhibition attracted alot of interest (and intrigue) from library visitors.
On the two Saturdays the children also ran small workshops where they demonstrated origami and clay modeling, inviting the public to have a go.
Rotorua Pleasure Painters This is a diverse collection of work by members of the Pleasure Painters Art Group, a local group formed some 25 years ago, initially with the aim to provide on-going therapy for athritic patients at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. From weekend sessions supported by volunteers, the group evolved to include other interested members and is now located in Wohlman House - now known as RAVE. Members meet every fortnight on Fridays there.
With a mix of experienced and newcomers to art, the group provides companionship and support for anyone interested in this wonderful hobby. For any enquiries, phone Vicky at Ph. 07 345 4603 or Joyce at Ph. 07 345 3302.
Miriam Ruberl 9th - 28th November
As a woman who is obsessed with a number of things, including art of various types, I exercise my artistic passion with painting, collage, drawing, photography, using a range of mediums and moving between realistic representation and abstraction, to totally intuitive impulse. This makes for an exciting, interesting life, although it does sometimes confuse those who think one has to pick a medium and a style! I am particularly drawn to texture and colour, ambiguity in interpretation and expressing the sheer joy and privilege of being alive, and use whatever medium suit my idea.
Over the past 25 years, I’ve gradually re-arranged my life so that whereas I used to manage one work a year in my annual holidays, I am now a fulltime artist. I am currently participating in a Masters in Art and Creativity, and have settled in Rotorua to devote myself to deepening my skills and art work. What a fantastic place to do this in!
I facilitate workshops by request and private art groups from time to time which have a general focus of helping people achieve their own artistic goals in a particular medium. If you’d like to talk to me about these, or about any of the work on display, do visit my website www.beauty4you.co.nz, contact me at miriam.ruberl@gmail.com or call me on 027 2487542, and I’d love to have a chat with you about your work too!

Judith Prictor 30th November - 20th December
Inspiration for Judith's work comes from the surrounding environment; her garden, the lakes, forest and landscape in the Bay of Plenty and other parts of NZ. Watercolour is her passion but she does like to experiment with acrylics and oils creating textural and expressionistic images. She also works with wool, dyeing it herself and creating garments by spinning, weaving or felting.
You can visit Judith's garden or gallery by phoning 07 347 6371 and leaving a message.
Andy Gilbert 21st December 2009 - 9th January 2010 Andy Gilbert is currently exhibiting in Toi Tangata and again, we get to experience something quite different. Andy’s photographic skills combined with computer graphic art software create new and exciting images where reality is blurred, sharpened, saturated, enhanced or reconstructed as determined by the artist. Come in and see Andy’s work and make enquiries if you would like your favourite photo to be given some special treatment. Andy’s contact is info@tw2.co.nz
