Librarians at Rotorua Library, Te Aka Mauri are gearing up for another busy summer with a range of fun events and activities for all ages.
Donovan Bixley is coming to Rotorua Library
We are very excited to have Donovan Bixley, NZ author and illustrator of many amazing picture and chapter books, visiting on Thursday 16 January. From 10.30am he will offer a presentation and book signing to young readers of the Māui books and at 11.30am children aged 6+ can hear about his chapter books, such as his award-winning “Monkey Boy”. Bookings aren’t required for these two free events. Older children and teens who like to draw will be delighted to hear that Donovan is offering a cartooning workshop for 11-18 year olds from 1-2pm. Tickets for this awesome workshop are just $5 and with limited spaces we advise booking soon.
Great Te Aka Mauri Summer Reading Challenge - read away your fines
With a focus on encouraging children to read, the Great Te Aka Mauri Summer Reading Challenge has been developed. It’s inevitable that from time to time, books will be returned late and overdue fines add up on your library card. By participating in our summer reading challenge you can pay off your overdue fines without having to open your wallet or swipe your eft-pos card. Every 15 minutes of reading that you log will wipe $2 off your overdue fines.
As well as being able to read away fines, children, who read or are read to, for more than 8 hours are eligible to win a share of $1000 worth of vouchers. There is a bonus prize draw for readers who log more than 20 hours as well! We’re expecting hundreds of families to take part, clearing overdue fines from their cards, going in the draw to win prizes and enjoying great reading over summer.
Lots of activities
A range of fun craft activities are on offer including Summer Paper Spinners, Bees & Butterflies (water feeders), Summer Pinwheels and Canvas Wall Art. We invite children who prefer to be outside to participate in our Outdoor Games and Parachute Launch in Jean Batten Square.
Our ever popular Lego® programme is back, this time challenging children to recreate famous landmarks incuding the Eiffel Tower, Great Wall of China and Sky Tower with our library Lego® set.
Summer He Pī Ka Rere is also on offer each Tuesday in January with story time, songs, movement and craft for under 5’s.
QR Code Scavenger Hunt
Our much loved scavenger hunt is back but with a twist – bring an adult with a tablet or phone with a QR code app and scan the QR codes to get clues that will reveal the secret sentence. All correct entries received by 4pm on Sunday 2 February 2020 will go in the draw to win a prize.
Tickets for Canvas Wall Art, World Lego® Landmarks and the Donovan Bixley Cartooning Workshop are available via the library website www.rotorualibrary.govt.nz/holidays
