Te Aka Mauri Robotics Club represents at Nationals

Te Aka Mauri’s Robotics Club started in June 2019 with only four members from three different schools and has since grown to 12 members strong. The members of the club are all aged between 11 and 13 and meet every week for 1.5 hours.  During this time they learn about engineering, design, coding and electronics. Members also gain skills in teamwork, competition, planning, failure, resilience and communication.

In the short period since the Club started meeting they have participated in the Robocup Jnr Theatre Competition in Hamilton, coming second equal in our division, and Aquabots in Rotorua with one team qualifying for the Nationals. At the recent Aquabots Nationals in Nelson The Soggy Potatoes from the Te Aka Mauri Robotics Club based in the Rotorua Library were 1st in Harvest and Trade, 3rd in Celestial Navigation and finished 2nd overall in the Primary/Intermediate category (out of 24 teams).

The Soggy Potatoes.  L – R. Callum Moore, Cameron Moore, Kevin Wu, Jessica Wilkes (coach)

The team are grateful to all the sponsors, mentors and coaches who supported them in particular sponsors who made the Rotorua Regional possible: Rotorua Lakes Council, Rotorua Museum, Rotorua Library, Hayes International, Innovatek, Toi-Ohomai, Rotorua Aquatic Centre,  Tompkins Wake, Bay Trust, Unison and Friends of the Library. Our team of talented robotics students are now preparing to compete in VEX Robotics thanks to a grant from the Mazda Foundation for our equipment.

These competitions all require different technical skills, for example the Robocup Jnr Competition focused on coding robots to interact with each other autonomously, Aquabots focused on presentation skills and manevaourability underwater, while VEX focuses on engineering and teamwork.

We are operating a waitlist for the Te Aka Mauri Robotics Club and are always looking for volunteers to help support on a weekly basis.  Additional volunteers means that we can expand the size of the club so please get in contact if you can help.  Email Jessica.
