Family History Month
Family History Month is an annual month-long initiative observed during the month of August across New Zealand and Australia.
Rotorua Library holds a series of events and activities each August to encourage our community to research, celebrate and connect with their whakapapa / family history.
This programme of events is supported by The Friends of the Rotorua Library.
Family History Month - August 2026
A month-long programme celebrating the lives, stories, and legacies of those who have passed:
- A special Family History Day with local heritage organisations and The National Army Museum.
- Weekly genealogy drop-in sessions.
- A guided showcase of library collections.
- An exhibition exploring identity and connection.
- A family history-themed treasure hunt.
We invite you to reflect, learn, and engage with your own histories. Whether you are beginning your family history journey, or seeking meaningful ways to honour loved ones, these free activities will provide ways for you to connect, be inspired, and celebrate your unique history.
