Dyslexia-friendly books for children
At least one in ten New Zealanders have dyslexia - this is a learning difficulty that primarily affects reading and writing. This is a key reason why we want to make dyslexia-friendly resources more accessible to our community.
Our dyslexia-friendly books
Over 100 of our junior fiction books that have been identified as being ‘dyslexia-friendly’ are labelled with fluro green spine labels) and sit as one collection at the start of the Junior Fiction chapter books in Children’s.
What is a dyslexia-friendly book?
These Junior Fiction books have been identified as being 'dyslexia-friendly'.
Dyslexia-friendly features include:
- Plain, evenly spaced fonts, including: Open Dyslexic, Arial and Comic Sans.
- A dark-coloured text on a light (but not white) background.
- A clear layout, with larger font and line spacing.
- The use of illustrations and other visuals to help explain the text.
- Avoiding the use of underlining, italics and writing only in capitals.
eBooks are also dyslexia-friendly
With the free library apps, BorrowBox and Platform, any eBook can also be converted into a dyslexia-friendly format. Once you have borrowed and downloaded an eBook, tap the Aa icon to access the settings.
